Minsthorpe Leisure Centre in Yorkshire is managed by Wakefield Council - offering a 25-metre swimming pool, a gym, and fitness classes including Zumba, Pilates, HIIT workouts, and boxercise.

Wakefield Council commissioned the building to provide the area with a brand-new leisure centre, with the latest in sports facilities for local people. The project took 14 months to build and was opened in February 2018.

The design of the building needed to be both aesthetically pleasing and easily recognisable as the new local leisure centre, since the building was situated next to a busy road and needed to attract local residents. The challenge, however, was to ensure that the cladding was long lasting.

As with all swimming pools, there is a risk of corrosion due to the chlorine used to keep the pool water clean. These harsh chemicals can degrade certain materials, such as A2/304 and A4/316 stainless steel, so it was important to ensure that the fixings selected would last and would not corrode.

With support from our technical team, JML Building Services were advised to use our TapFast Stainless HCR fasteners - manufactured from 1.4529-grade stainless steel with a 6-7% molybdenum content for high corrosion resistance, in accordance with BS EN ISO 3506-4:2009 Annex C.

TapFast stainless steel self-tapping fasteners are designed for fixing to steel or timber purlins in corrosive environments such as swimming pools, tunnels, industrial plants and marine areas - ideal for use at the leisure centre, as they have proven resistance to chlorine corrosion.

The finished effect was a brand-new swimming pool with roofing and cladding fixings that would stay in place despite the risk of corrosion.
