When fastening timber into steel, you must use a countersunk head self-drilling fastener that has been designed for this application.

Some timber-to-steel self-drilling fasteners feature special wings, which will make a wider hole in the timber than in the metal. When the self-drilling fastener reaches the metal substrate, the wings will be knocked off to ensure a hole of the correct diameter is drilled to allow the thread to engage the substrate.

A specialist fastener may be required when fixing into steel less than 1.2mm thick (for example, securing roof tile battens to profiled metal sheet). Please speak to the manufacturer about your specific application.

Fasteners for fixing timber into steel are available in carbon or stainless steel.
