Steel box section is typically used for structural applications, and to achieve a higher structural performance a nut and bolt style fastener is traditionally specified.

However, due to its enclosed nature it can be almost impossible to fit a nut and bolt. The solution is to use a blind bolt such as a Hollo-bolt.

How does a Hollo-bolt or a blind bolt work?

There are a number of Hollo-bolt manufacturers and each product works in a slightly different way.

With some, as the bolt is tightened, the anchor is pivoted to create the clamping force. With the Hollo-bolt a sleeve is inserted into the hole and as the bolt is tightened the sleeve separates and flares out to create the clamping force.

When fixing into box section you can often use a self-drilling or self-tapping fastener.
